It is important to examine what libraries are doing to attract the youth. Libraries have come a long way since the early days of dusty rows of book stacks. Driven by advances in technology, libraries today are evolving into community spaces that encourage engagement and innovation.
One of the main roles of the South Campus of the University of the Free State (UFS) is to draw students from lower levels of education into the University Access Programme (UAP), in order to provide an opportunity for students to enter into higher education so that they can develop their full potential and realize their dreams.
In most cases the Neville Alexander Library, on the South Campus of the UFS, is the student’s first exposure to a library. At this library students are welcomed with tablets when entering the library in order for them to immediately engage with technology, and to observe that libraries are no longer a space with old dusty books, but rather an environment within which to engage with technology.
