Open Educational Resources (OER)

Open Educational Resources (OER) are learning, teaching and research materials available in a variety of formats, such as textbooks, courses, journals, multimedia and more.

Why create OERs?

Academic freedom to add content that are exactly to your requirements.

Extends your academic profile.

More relevant and engaging material for your students.

Reduces costs for your students.

How to get started

  1. Think about the different devices you and your students are using. OERs should be accessible to as many of your students, as much of the time, as possible. When you create an OER, will it be accessible on PC, Mac, iOS, Android?
  2. How are you going to deliver your content? Think about your comfort level with technology and use the tech and tools you are most comfortable with. The University provides templates for content creation and guidance on using the UFS OER platform.
  3. Test the content. Just to make sure everything is working or displaying as it should.
  4. Look at other OERs for ideas and inspiration.
  5. Understand copyright and open licensing, for using and creating OERs.
  6. Create diverse content, where possible. Use different formats. Some formats might be more suitable for what you want to deliver: images, audio recordings, text, videos, pre-recorded slideshows, and more. Contact the Digital Scholarship Centre for assistance in creating a wide variety of digital content.
  7. Always evolve! New ideas, approaches, technology changes the educational landscape every year. Adapt your content and delivery regularly.
