In August 1991, excited holiday-makers boarded the Oceanos at East London for the trip of a lifetime. Despite treacherous weather, the captain ordered the ship to set sail for Durban. And so began the ill-fated voyage.
Hurricane force winds and giant rogue waves aggravated the hostile storm. Soon the ship started taking water. Panicked senior crew members scrambled into lifeboats leaving the ship’s evacuation to the on-board entertainers. At one point, a musician manned the bridge, at another, a magician.
Women and children clambered aboard lifeboats which were launched into terrifying seas, leaving their husbands behind, unsure if they would see each other again. After all the operational lifeboats had been utilised, 221 passengers and junior crew were left stranded on the rapidly sinking ship.
During this catastrophe the South African Air Force embarked on their biggest air rescue ever, with helicopter crews and Navy divers risking everything to evacuate the remaining passengers.

The Guinean-born Amílcar Cabral has been hailed as one of the most original voices in revolutionary processes on the African continent. He was not only behind one of the most resourceful independence movement in Africa, the PAIGC (African Party for the Liberation of Guinea and Cape Verde). But the challenge he posed against the colonial military might was also instrumental to end of Portuguese colonialism altogether. For reaction against Estado Novo brewed mostly in Bissau, on the account of a war the Portuguese was waging against the guerrilla and could not win. This biography describes Cabral’s upbringing in Cape Verde, his political coming of age in Lisbon, as a student in agronomy and anticolonial activist, as well as his transformation into one of the most revered revolutionaries in the world. However, contrary to most studies on Cabral, which tend to rely on the materials produced during the liberation war, this book approaches the life of Cabral from a slightly different perspective. It explores a trove of Lusophone sources, particularly those ones that use contemporary issues to illuminate historical conundrums. The political trajectory Cape Verde and Guinea-Bissau have followed sheds light not only on Cabral’s quest for identity – being born in Guinea-Bissau from Cape Verdeans parents – But also on the day-to-day conduction of the anti-colonial war itself.

In March 2013, South Africa suffered its worst military defeat since the end of apartheid. Not only is South Africa in an economic rut, but high levels of corruption, patronage and state capture also means it suffers from severe institutional rot. This rot distracts attention from policy debates, while the accompanying political and administrative mismanagement creates policy uncertainty. Policy uncertainty and economic underperformance, in turn, lead to low investment. The result is low economic growth and high unemployment.
The first democratic government in 1994 inherited an underperforming economy with a broken labour system. Apartheid's labour system comprised a labour market that up to the mid-1980s suffered from the stifling effects of job reservation. It also comprised the Bantu education system and the Bantustan, and influx control system.
Within the first three years, the first democratic government introduced new labour legislation that modernised the South African labour market and protected worker rights. Democracy also meant that the Bantustan governments were abolished (although traditional chiefs were left in place) and the fragmented, race-based education departments were merged into a non-racial education system. But these reforms did not bring work and prosperity.
In his new book, Professor Philippe Burger explains why this did not happen. Central to this explanation is policy failure and patronage. He also sets out to explain the key problems inhibiting economic growth, job creation and a reduction of inequality and poverty, and discusses the actions that should constitute the government's policy agenda. These actions are intended to introduce the necessary structural and policy changes needed to put South Africa on the road towards prosperity and higher levels of employment.
Suffice it to say that South Africa needs a drastic change of direction if the country is to have a higher, more inclusive level of economic activity and a better livelihood for all.

The concept of guerrilla warfare is not decades, but many centuries old, with earliest writing on the subject by Sun Tzu dating back to the 6th Century BC. Some guerrilla tactics are probably as old as the first armed groups of cavemen, being a natural evolution of conflict between groups of disproportionate sizes. Ayesha (Bibi) Dawood became a dedicated activist in the fifties and stood trial with others like Nelson Mandela during the infamous Treason Trials. This two-volume book covers the history of the Ratel from the requirement for an ICV for the SA Army in the late 1960s and early 1970s through to the development, production and deployment of Ratel and to its final major combat operation of the Border War in 1989.
The book is about Ratel, not about the Border War; although, obviously, elements of that conflict feature in some detail in some chapters. The book is also about those who developed and produced Ratel, those who developed the tactics and battle-handling of mechanised infantry and mechanised operations generally and, especially, those who saw combat in and with this stalwart. It also serves as a tribute to those of the mechanised forces of the SADF who paid the supreme sacrifice for South Africa while operating in Ratel and with the SADF’s mechanised forces. The end of the Border War is deemed a fitting point at which to end this telling of the Ratel Story.

It also covers the development and evolution of the mechanised infantry doctrine and of Ratel from a basic ICV to a fully-fledged combat system. It focuses on Ratel in combat and addresses operational and related matters. It eventually tackles the question “Did the Ratel ICV and the mechanised infantry doctrine work?”
The two volumes of this book are complementary, each with its own approach and detail. In essence, Volume 1 is the heart of the Ratel Story; Volume 2 reflects its soul.

The increasing lack of discipline in South African schools and the impact thereof is well known. In most instances, existing punitive measures do not yield the required results. Yet, schools continue to scramble to find alternative punishments that will result in a disciplined environment conducive to teaching and learning. Dit is asof die Britte voor die Anglo-Boereoorlog net gewag het dat die ZAR (Transvaal) die spoorlyne voltooi het, toe hulle die Boere-Republieke uitgelok het met die Jameson-inval. Die eerste skoot en artillerieprojektiele wat tydens die oorlog afgevuur was, was juis op ’n trein by Kraaipan, suid van Mafikeng.
Na die aanvanklike suksesse deur die Boeremagte in die begin van die oorlog, het die Britte die oorhand gekry en is die Boere-Republieke beset.
Mobiliteit was krities vir die groot Britse mag. Dit het die Boere ook besef en met hulle uittog uit Natal, het hulle alle brûe, waterreservoirs, en tonnels opgeblaas in ’n poging om die Britse opmars te stuit.
Mettertyd, soos die Boere se voorrade opgeraak het, het hulle besef dat die spoorlyne, die voedingsaar van Britse militêre voorrade, hulle goed te pas sal kom. Aanvanklik is treine amper daagliks in hulle spore gestuit deur ghries op spoorstawe te smeer, klippe om draaie te pak en spoorstawe los te maak.
Van die Boerekommandos het treine teen steil bulte ingejaag met hulle perde en die remme se vakuumpype gesny, waarna die treine se remme aangeslaan het. Dit het die Britte genoop om masjiengewere op treintrokke voor en agter die treine te monteer om sulke aanslae af te weer.
Die Boere moes gou alternatiewe maniere soek en dis waar die vindingrykheid van Carl Cremer, die eerste “IED” eiehandig gebou en beproef het. Die eerste trein wat met dinamiet opgeblaas is, was suid van die hedendaagse Yskor-werke by eMalahleni.
Dit het groot amok onder die Britte gesaai en was hulle genoop om alle treinvervoer snags, op te skort.
Treinspore moes vroeg soggens eers geïnspekteer word alvorens treinvervoer kon voortgaan. Hierdie spoormyn was so gewild onder die Boere dat sewe kommando’s in die Transvaal geopereer het.
Van hierdie kommando’s het soms uit nege lede bestaan en het kans gesien om treine voor te lê, waarvan die hoeveelheid Britse troepe op die naderende treine onbekend was.
Die Boere moes naby die spoorlyne stellings inneem en het soms die Engelse in die oë gekyk voordat die myn ontplof het. Die rede hiervoor was omdat die Britte oral loopgrawe langs die spoorlyne gegrawe het om in te skuil indien treine ontspoor word.
Hierdie treinvernielers het die Britte raadop gehad. Lospryse is later op van die Boere se koppe geplaas, maar dit het hulle nie afgeskrik nie. Mettertyd het die plasing van blokhuise langs die spoorlyne en spesiale pantsertreine, draadversperrings, diep slote en “booby traps” langs spoorlyne hierdie Boerebedrywighede aan bande gelê.
Die boek gee ’n breedvoerige bespreking van die ontstaan van die spoorweë in die Transvaal en ook bou van stasies.
Verskeie aanvalle op treine, wat later unieke name gehad het weens die vrag wat hulle vervoer het, of die plekke waar dit plaasgevind het, soos die “Suiker-“, “Whiskey-” , “Krismis-“, Hartbeeslaagte, Koekemoer, Frederikstad en “Ganger hut”.
Die aanvalle word breedvoerig bespreek en op kaarte aangedui. Waar moontlik, is die GPS koördinate gegee, asook die maan se posisies tydens nagaanvalle. Alle gesneuwelde Boere en Britte tydens treinaanvalle se name is aangeteken, asook waar hulle begrawe is. Daar is ook ’n volledige opsomming van alle spoorinsidente regoor Suid-Afrika van die begin tot die einde van die oorlog.
Deur die toedoen van Boere treinvernielers, word ’n pantsertrein vroeg in die ABO deur die Boere ontspoor waartydens Winston Churchill, die latere Eerste Minister van Engeland gedurende die Tweede Wêreldoorlog, krygsgevange geneem word.
Hierdie Boerekommando’s kan as die eerste “recces” in Suid-Afrika beskou word, want dit was juis hulle wat Winston Churchill geïnspireer het om die Britse spesmagte, die sogenaamde “Special Air Services” (SAS) op die been te bring tydens die Tweede Wêreldoorlog.

Die Suid-Afrikaanse Polisie was die heel eerste van al die veiligheidsmagte wat in Suidwes-Afrika en Caprivi ontplooi is met die aanvang van van die Bosoorlog in 1966 en hulle was nog steeds’ daar toe die laaste skote in 1989 oor Ovamboland wegsterf en die gebied onafhanklik word. Die Bosoorlog het 23 jaar lank geduur. Gedurende hierdie tydperk is SAP lede ook vir 8 jaar lank in Rhodesië ontplooi.
