Tips on finding good OERs

What defines good OERs? How do you judge their provenance? How do you find OER content that will be suitable for your course?

OERs include a range of materials, from textbooks to lecture notes. Here are some tips on find the right OER:

  • Trust your gut, and your training. Use your knowledge and expertise to judge the accuracy of the content. If you're unsure, fact-check it, or don't use it.
  • Grammatical and typographical errors might not be an absolute indication of the quality of the content, but it should raise a red flag for further checks.
  • Does it align with your learning objectives?
  • OER content should be adaptable. If the license or the file format doesn't allow for modification, the OER creator did not understand that the idea is to adapt and modify content to meet specific teaching objectives and encourage learning. Take a look at the CARE Framework for more on what good OERs look like.
  • When you find an OER that could be suitable for your own content, look for legitimate authors and institutions. Some OERs encourage peer review.
  • Use rubrics to help you determine the quality of OERs.
