OER design tips

Here are some OER design tips to create shareable, reusable content:

  • Start with what you have found, or what you already have. Your materials may be available offline. Use them to start creating your OER.
  • Your OER should be accessible to all students. The Learning Portal provides an accessibility checklist to guide your content creation, or the BCcampus Open Education Accessibility Toolkit.
  • Your content should be adaptable for users to reuse. Creating modular content makes reuse easier, as well as having a version of your work that is in an editable format, such as Word or PowerPoint, and not only PDF.
  • Now make your content open. Use and display a Creative Commons license. If you use other OER content in your resource, make sure they are also open.
  • Making your content discoverable is the next step. The University has you covered with it's OER platform. Guidelines on uploading and review is available on this page.
  • Evaluate your content rigorously. Use available online rubrics, or contact CTL for advice on your content.
